INTRODUCTION
Indigenous Autonomous University of Mexico is located in Mochicahui, Fort Sinaloa, on the road from the city of Los Mochis and the town of Fort, is a community of major importance throughout the northern state of Sinaloa, no just because it is an area of excellence in agriculture, but for its history and tradition, a town with more than 400 years of existence with a touch of tradition-mem Yoreme May, and today is home to a host of young people from different backgrounds and cultures His only objective is to excel and attain professional help and bring improvements to their communities.
While she lives in a microworld with day to day, and sometimes living seems uncertain expectations, policies designed for the education of Indians at the macro level are sometimes government promotion slogan, by that I mean the institutions in regulation and legalization to the curriculum for them to be competitive and quality are all recognized by the sectors responsible for hiring staff, their organizations or companies, or otherwise make college to train young ability to create self-employment as entrepreneurs with leadership and training initiatives for the development of their communities of origin, all without the young forget their origins, their culture, language, tradition, their descendants and world view, actions that even intercultural universities have a long way to go.
No shoulder for years fighting indigenous groups from throughout the country have made to be heard, are taken into account and above all be respected in their cultural and social context, nor do an analysis of their expectations for policy today imposed by the state government, but on the contrary, I make this contribution from the perspective of what is happening in a particular location, with a specific example of how the process of formation of young students of Indian origin will converge with others who are not indigenous and expertise that has to face, knowing that there should not be limiting any action leading to poor training, but sometimes the reality is different.
I hope to make a small contribution to this debate today is now open to the formation of different intercultural universities in the Republic, knowing that each region has specific problems and trainers know we all are.
DEVELOPMENT
Before arriving in about a mile UAIM said “welcome to Mochicahui the heart of the ethnic groups.” That phrase struck me so much but never thought it could mean a lot until I came to this university and I realized how much value has to be an indigenous and more an Indian university.
Mochicahui is known in different places with anyone in this town was created one of the first universities to indigenous peoples, it was host to 26 ethnic groups from different Mexican states, in addition to foreign students from the Republics of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Ecuador, most of whom are from different ethnic groups in their countries of origin, but not only indigenous youth have the opportunity at this university, even those who are not indigenous, that is where their motto includes “all people, all people “states the opening sentence to the diversity of thoughts and ways of looking at life from different cultures in one place converge in search of social welfare.
Indigenous Autonomous University of Mexico more than a challenge as a public institution has responsibilities not only indigenous communities but society as a whole, because that’s where it interacts not only the indigenous, white, mestizo, and Afro forming a background different cultures with their different ways of seeing reality and academic theory into practice provides links that allow you to have improvements in quality of life of all peoples.
Being in the “UAIM” one of the best moments that could have happened, I will begin to narrate how a place has a “microworld” where young people from different places, with different mindsets, different languages , cultures and traditions are integrated into a single essence which is the goal of becoming a “somebody in life” to give that proud parents, that the family has a lawyer, or engineer, a pride that we know that needs a lot of effort and sacrifice.Arrive at a different place is very difficult for many, that I noticed during the course of two years I’ve been at this university, the summer of 2006 I met so many young people note of Chiapas, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Edo. Mexico, Sinaloa, Sonora, Chihuahua and several states in the country, young people wanting to overcome, many of them sad and wanting to return home, some because they were the first time out of their villages, their “ranches “as we say, some ignorant of many things, other communication problems or words to ignore differences and find a reality that sometimes exceeded what is thought, some more because they have always spoken his native language and have difficulty speaking Spanish and feel slighted.
This problem is specific to the identity and I think in my opinion is the first element as intercultural university challenge must rescue, is the obvious, we know that she represents the culture of each person, she finds traces your digital existence, it does identify as originating from a region or culture, but not just doing it as rhetoric or speech but in deed and above all dignity and respect for differences of opinions, worldviews and expressions in the cultural background of each region allowing a better relationship between cultures.
For year after year UAIM welcomes young people from various states and regions, from north to south without any distinction, makes being immersed in this microworld where you can listen, speak, go in a different way, the contrasts between regions separated only by distance, but the mechanisms of communication are no barriers, that different ways of seeing are not really an excuse to exclude, reject or discriminate but rather to be the bridge needed to be more inclusive societies and prepared the challenges that modern societies require.
The Spanish language proficiency is vital here at the university, and the minimum management software (PC) and as a second language in English is necessary accreditations to present your final accreditation, which some young people coming from far off places without ever having left their homeland, these interactions are difficult, but the coexistence within the UAIM is very good, here are friendly, help them settle in, and give them the necessary information from us, and the university has with the tutor system, and a familiarization program is a program where young people integrate new hires, are known and are expressed doubts both as comments, to familiarize each other, breaking down the barrier of shyness, language and prejudices that have between Indians and mestizos, the program further extends its service in tutoring, that once the student is integrated into their activities if you have doubts, questions, comments, or problems of various kinds, the guardian has responsibility to help, or tell you to do in case of problems, those are the contributions that our university offers young. But also within the challenges that intercultural universities and especially our university is the community liaison relationship so that students can offer their knowledge in a rational manner, without charge, without prejudice to other cultures or yours own interaction with the community must be to rescue the values, language, traditions, the teachings of our ancestors, preservation of mother nature, using techniques and technologies that enable sustainability and respect for natural resources .
But how intercultural university can achieve these goals, As can integrate without losing the identity, Without homogenizing or acculturate them or turn them into men of science without losing its essence.
Here is a great challenge for these universities to UAIM although since its inception was conceived as a university for indigenous Yolem-Mem, May in the northern part of Sinaloa with a socio-cultural education model disappeared Project structural issues different interventions serious rethinking of the state in educational models for indigenous people.
And over time for reasons of convenience, supply basic needs such as infrastructure and take better facilities, the dining room and bedrooms, computer centers, which were needed resources were not counted and the growing demand of young people year to year increase, and the operating expenses of staff members and teachers, even more official recognition by the SEP should be at college, was so in order to enter the resources of the federation would have to integrate the intercultural model, which was becoming progressively, until leaving the socio-cultural model to enter the intercultural educational model. The application of the cross at the university dates back more than a model that meets your standards, we understand that in the case of the UAIM, is still complex due to different ethnic groups converge mean different worldviews to see reality, even more so also there are mestizos and foreign young people in the same relationship between one and another and inertia of cohabitation it is leaving some customs and acquiring others.
I think that was the case with our partner who will then narrate their way through the UAIM. This young man from the state of Chiapas who by a twist of fate we are in the UAIM, here we have both men’s and women’s hostels, a dining room, 2 computer centers, sports fields, where every day we interact all of different races, different degrees He joined our room where we were 10 students at that time shared the hostel room with the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Nayarit, with good average guy, very dedicated, Tzeltal language speaker and practiced with some colleagues from the same region, very sociable and a dedicated and responsible Adventist belief.
There were times we found it profoundly sad, overwhelmed because I was away from his parents and siblings, sometimes I found ourselves crying and very desperate, sometimes you see things we did, what aconsejabamos, give encouragement, of course the way we thought convenient as it was a good student, during the months of adaptation, he was open to us, and organizational activities within the hostel, but I think that happened a little harder for him to express his own voice that he was not happy who did not understand the way of teaching, and that their customs were different, besides that communication is difficult, because he had already been assessed and we knew that after the holidays in December again see him again and indeed the return from vacation saw him again but it was only to say goodbye to us.
Other young people from different parts of the same thing happened this year in both 2006 and 2007, many of these defections were mainly in the northern region, mainly young people of Sinaloa, some arriving in less than a week dropped, and others to pass day, perhaps because the model had difficulty adapting education to the circumstances of weather, change of habits and customs, food, as well as not very confident coming to stay or privileges because some were better at home than away from it or because they did not like the conditions or university facilities, this situation may have been what happened to our friend.
But solutions to the problems that happen at this university in terms of commitments to society and particularly with indigenous communities are diverse if not a micro, as the ways young people see the world view of reality, the application educational programs, materials tutor relations and reality, the interaction between different geographical areas and languages of most of the republic is so interesting to see the interpersonal relationship and interaction of both teachers and administrative staff, where what is sought is respect for others, respect for their language, their traditions, their clothing, their food, their indigenous status, no sneer indium, respect for their humble and simple condition not common, in that sense gives priority to the other by the person as is his lineage that represents pride and no disrespect or discrimination.
The answers may be very different to the issues raised above, the coexistence range from the inexplicable behavior of young people, to the extent expected by the different experiences made previously, so I think the UAIM feeds a climate of academic responsibility proper to student, to be critical and analytical in the problems of society, of being able to provide solutions to real problems and commit to their community back home to put into practice the knowledge acquired in college, this according to the model of intercultural education, hopefully this for the good of the indigenous communities.
Promote within the same local knowledge intercultural universities, the wise teaching of millennia that have been passed down in our cultures, to rescue the origin of science in essence and not to official speeches, encouraging joint identity, not from the point ethnocentric view, but with foundations based on the identities of different peoples, take responsibility for what we are social actors and subjects involved in a changing world.
Educational tools to foster respect, ethics, morality, not from the pastoral point of view or sectarian or religious, but for coexistence between people who respect their speech, dress, who respect their work, home, and all basic human rights, this is of great importance, it is vital to perform these actions, because not only are forming young people with productive potential for a company or community, but people who are immersed in a changing world, with technologies and policies inclusive which are sometimes for better or for worse.
And today even after several centuries of discrimination, marginalization, and nearly exterminate our cultures those people today are encouraged by the hope of sharing the land they have always dreamed of where their children live with different cultures, and color, religion, language and way of seeing life is not a limitation that allows them to grow with better welfare and a decent life as our ancestors have always wanted.
CONCLUSION
We know that much remains to be done, both university officials and governments that are local or federal, so the shared participation of indigenous communities, since they owe the knowledge that thousands are still preserved, even more so are we as students are who we must give the right direction for our university to be considered as an institution which respects and strengthens cultures, where our identity as Indians is represented, and in turn can coexist with other cultures that are not indigenous, where there respect and above all, tolerance, harmony and peaceful coexistence in order to make this society a more just and equal in rights and opportunities.
The commitments of the university are many and perhaps are only projects, it is necessary to get to work all proposals that are rational, in compliance with all the dignity of others, be it indigenous or mestizo, it is white or African, in the range of thoughts and world view of different peoples and facing different problems that afflict the communities be they urban or rural areas, promoting the necessary means to have a better quality education, better living conditions and especially to be inclusive in all models aspects, not homogenized, not excluding them, but taking into account their needs and their way of seeing our world.
This microworld is sometimes different from others but we must take into account that official policy is always to advocate for their models, but we need to know “what those models” that allow us to better understand our needs so we can say that in the intercultural university or whether they will not always accommodate all the people all peoples.
